Can we talk about this? at NT Lyttelton

April 1, 2012

Wow!

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow…

What an incredible production. As many people have said, this was a brave piece for the National but in the hands of DV8 was expertly done. An examination of how events over the years have influenced multicultural policies and have been influenced by multicultural ideas, this show was based on real voices and interviews and combined speech with movement to get a message across.

The performances were amazing – the agility and stamina of the performers stretched to the limit at times as they combined lengthy and punchy monologues with intricate moves. The show was visually challenging yet delightful to watch – I was surprised at how quickly I accepted the tick-tock staccato head movements of the first piece.

This was one of the most interesting and extraordinary pieces I have seen for a very long time, visually stunning and intellectually thought-provoking. We felt as if our heads might explode by the end of the show, there was so much going on and so much to talk about afterwards…
