Misterman at NT Lyttelton

May 5, 2012

The UK premiere of Misterman by Enda Walsh stars Cillian Murphy – not the first time the two have collaborated on a production.

Misterman takes us into the world of a rather manic evangelist (Thomas Magill) in a small Irish town. The industrial set is warehouse like and represents Thomas’s home as well as the local town. Additional voices are provided by taped recordings, seemingly operated by Cillian Murphy as he takes ownership of the stage in this one-man show.

In this extremely physical show we see Thomas plunge into a madness and desperation as he feels mocked and misunderstood by the townsfolk, with devastating results. Cillian Murphy gives a quite astonishing performance as Thomas – raw emotion fused with manic energy and illogical reason and reaction. The set is open, making a vast space, which Cillian Murphy fills with a mesmerising presence.

I was not sure about the play at first, but the more I think about it the more I think I enjoyed it. Highly recommended.
